Take any religion to it's most absurd literal extreme, and you'll end up with a lunatic. The average modern day Muslim does have a tendency to still take their religion a little too literally whereas most, not all, of your average western type religious folks don't take theirs all that seriously in the most literal sense of the word. Consequently your average Muslim is more prone to be radicalized given the proper circumstances. Living in a poverty stricken, backwards type environment will do that. So will living in a radical left, the man is fucking you environment, which is why we see Muslims living in what would be considered above average standards still become subject to radicalization, as were the two screwballs in California.
What seems like a more wide spread number of radicals is really a simple population explosion equation. You're always going to have the ten percenters. Ten percent of a hundred thousand is a manageable number. Ten percent of a million...harder to manage. Ten percent of a hundred million...you get the drift. So whether it's radical extremists in any religion or the inner city thugs, as the population grows so does the unmanageability.
We're approaching a tipping point. We, as the human race need to get a whole hell of a lot smarter if things are to improve, and we need to do it pronto, or we need a plague, (which you could call radical Islamists/thugs), to kill off about half the earths population. I'm betting on the terrorists, as the level of stupidity in the western world is growing by leaps and bounds.
