When I worked at an Investment Bank, ZH wasn't around, and I wasn't in Trading, so no firsthand experience on this. But, I have heard the same, that is ZH is very popular in trading / analytics crowd

Sure, why not. As I said earlier, I find it entertaining and occasionally educational read. I neither trade their calls or fade it either.
They also successfully called 27 of the 2 bitcoin rallys.
I think what it comes down to is they nailed a certain "media consumption" demographics. the doom and gloom joos are in your cereal demographics. and they cater to them in spades. and they make money off ad revenue. that's all there is to it. they don't have to be right, they just have to please their readers and confirm their views.
So that demo is always short equities and usd and always long gold and bitcoin.
