The solution to migration is what Harris was doing/starting, making the source nations better places to live. If that means putting bullets through the brains of Daniel and Rosario Ortega, I'll help, but these countries are in failure because of US policy.

I think the reason we disagree is that I just don't take either of them, Trump nor Kamala, at their word. Trump won't implement "mass deportations", it's just not possible. Kamala isn't going to miraculously save the less fortunate. Again, it's just not possible. They're both lying through their teeth to get power for themselves.

So, if you will, what I see is Trump running on fear and Kamala running on hope. I guess I'm just the type of person who prefers dealing with an unfounded fear than a hope which goes unfulfilled. That's just me though.

But whoever wins, in four years, I'd bet, the vast majority of people won't be affected by anything except their own behavior.

Wealth disparity, however, may be far less of an issue than the dangers posed by increasing authoritarianism. Maintaining the pretense of democracy and freedom acts as a necessary mechanism to balance societal forces, even though those freedoms may be more limited than they appear.

When things go full Trump and advancement depends on your place in the uniparty, people on the outside will resist violently. On the other hand, when people believe they have a stake in the system, they tend to get along much better.

It’s a grim tradeoff: accepting limited, possibly illusory freedoms to avoid something worse, an entirely repressive, overt authoritarian regime.

We had this in the US South and it got predictably stagnant.

I'll also argue that if you understand the marginal utility of wealth, then it doesn't matter that the rich get richer. What you want to avoid is the poor being even poorer still, or worse... tricking them into the gulag.

What's preferable: the specter of overt fascism, or the reality of friendly fascism? I'll admit they're not great choices.

Out of curiosity... is it fair to say you'd rather keep a charade going to maintain your present standard of living, instead of moving toward a more authentic future at the risk of an unknown personal outcome?
