President Donald Trump in the summer of 2015, at a Family Leadership Summit in Ames, Iowa, said of Senator John McCain “He’s not a war hero. He was a war hero because he was captured. I like people who weren’t captured.” Immediately following his disparaging remarks, to the Press he denied saying McCain is not a war hero, and said, “If somebody’s a prisoner, I consider them a war hero.”
Trump later declined to apologize to McCain and called McCain “yet another all talk, no action politician who spends too much time on television and not enough time doing his job.”
Trump continued his attacks on McCain even after he took office.
Following Trumps remark in Ames, Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina tweeted : “If there was ever any doubt that @realDonaldTrump should not be our commander in chief, this stupid statement should end all doubt.” He added: “At the heart of @realDonaldTrump statement is a lack of respect for those who have served - a disqualifying characteristic to be president.”
This Memorial Day Morning, May 28, 2018, Trump tweeted "those who died for our great country would be very happy and proud at how well our country is doing today." Trump continued with his Memorial Day Self Congratulatory remarks by continuing with, ""Best economy in decades, lowest unemployment numbers for Blacks and Hispanics EVER (& women in 18years), rebuilding our Military and so much more. Nice!"
Later today, at Arlington National Cemetery, Trump read from prepared remarks: He called those who died in service to their Country our "Greatest Heroes."
I wonder if M. Trump, when he read those remarks, was excluding, in his mind, those buried at Arlington who were at some point prisoners of war, because he "likes people who weren't captured."
