Is Java platform slower in general?

My faourite online broker offers a java based trading platform and I wonder is Java/brower based platform slower than standalone platform like Tradestation, etc in general? If so, what the main problem with Java platform?
 
It really depends on what you are using it for. For quotes and execution, any difference between the two is NOT going to be noticeable even if split seconds count.

If you are using it for heavy number crunching, lots of charts, etc, software written in a language that creates native executables would probably be faster (C, C++, Delphi for example)
