Is it worth trading the week of Christmas & New Years?

Quote from cornholio:

Hi. Is it worth trading the week of Christmas & New Years? Is the market dead or can it still be traded?

There is no Christmas in the Forex market, as Japan and other non-Christian countries continue trading around the clock.

Back in the 90's and 00's pre HFT, holiday sessions were great opportunities. Now even if something is moving the volume is so awful it's not even worth it. You get size now and you're screwed.

You might trade bigger than me then. I have no problem with liquidity.

Or you trade on tighter ranges than I because a few cents is noise to my pnl.

Could one keep an eye on your implied long that avoids noise?

Price information is public. SPY range today is: 182.07 - 182.64.

The investor is long the gaps, and have no stop losses for the whole year. He made say 0.20/day. How could a trader that avoids noise & gaps, yet trades, beat him? How did you it for days like today where there is a gap? How do you deal with the set backs due to stops?

With regard to the stock market, Japan was on holiday today (Emperor's b'day). Japan is closed on Xmas day and also 4 out of 5 days of the first week of 2014.

There can be exceptional opportunities in the last two weeks of the year. As i stated elsewhere, i know v profitable traders who only trade in the last two weeks (no trading in the other 50 weeks ).

No clue what you trade..., or your skill – so my answer would be; no.., maybe.., possibly even yes

===========

For me it’s yes – why – that's how I stay in trading trim..., and – in tune with the mkt

I hate breaking my routine… I also hate price making a move and I not a clue how it got there

Everyone is different

depends on your broker, at ib, even forex has holiday hours

man that firm has really gone down hill

you use to be able to go to the home page and there was link to holiday hours, now I can't even find it on their whole site

my guess is forex will halt at 1700 dec 24 and open at 1715 dec 25

You are talking about retails traders, I was talking about corporations and high net worth individuals who trade directly on the Interbank.

If the CEO of BMW in Munich wants to buy 50 million US dollars right now, do you think he will have to wait until Christmas is over to do so, or wait for some forex broker to open his shop because of some holidays? :p
