Quote from achilles28:

You couldn't be more wrong.

Care to read what the Founders said in their own words?

"No Free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." (Thomas Jefferson, Proposal Virginia Constitution, 1 T. Jefferson Papers, 334,[C.J.Boyd, Ed., 1950])

"The right of the people to keep and bear...arms shall not be infringed. A well regulated militia, composed of the body of the people, trained to arms, is the best and most natural defense of a free country..." (James Madison, I Annals of Congress 434 [June 8, 1789])

"A militia, when properly formed, are in fact the people themselves...and include all men capable of bearing arms." (Richard Henry Lee, Additional Letters from the Federal Farmer (1788) at 169)

"What, Sir, is the use of a militia? It is to prevent the establishment of a standing army, the bane of liberty.... Whenever Governments mean to invade the rights and liberties of the people, they always attempt to destroy the militia, in order to raise an army upon their ruins." (Rep. Elbridge Gerry of Massachusetts, spoken during floor debate over the Second Amendment [ I Annals of Congress at 750 {August 17, 1789}])

"Americans have the right and advantage of being armed - unlike the citizens of other countries whose governments are afraid to trust the people with arms." (James Madison, The Federalist Papers #46 at 243-244)

"I ask, sir, what is the militia? It is the whole people, except for few public officials." (George Mason, 3 Elliot, Debates at 425-426)

"The Constitution shall never be construed....to prevent the people of the United States who are peaceable citizens from keeping their own arms" (Samuel Adams, Debates and Proceedings in the Convention of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, 86-87)

"To preserve liberty, it is essential that the whole body of people always possess arms, and be taught alike especially when young, how to use them." (Richard Henry Lee, 1788, Initiator of the Declaration of Independence, and member of the first Senate, which passed the Bill of Rights, Walter Bennett, ed., Letters from the Federal Farmer to the Republican, at 21,22,124 (Univ. of Alabama Press,1975)..)

"That the said Constitution shall never be construed to authorize Congress to infringe the just liberty of the press or the rights of conscience; or to prevent the people of The United States who are peaceable citizens from keeping their own arms..." (Samuel Adams, Debates and Proceedings in the Convention of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, at 86-87 (Peirce & Hale, eds., Boston, 1850))

It goes on and on and on..........

Will you reconsider now?

Reconsider? Reconsider what, a couple, at best of those nice words are currently in effect.

And how many of those nice words, are contained in the constitution?

Might as well be mark twain, any RECENT case law?
Has "peacable citizens" ever even been tested in court, for that matter?
OOps, their likely terrorists, no go there, to late, my bad .

Pray thee do tell, who might be these peacable citizens, who are, or arent members of militia groups, kind sir.

Militia, by definition, MUST be organised, hate to burst your bubble, like i said, disparate individuals having vast arsenals of war surplus, makes far more sense, the swedish or swiss model makes so much sense it ridiculous, strangely that isnt the model followed.

A forum i read, referred to the NRA being a sugar daddy, way back when, you could shoot all day long for the price of a popsicle, because they were looking to train rifleman, infantry if you like, to actually shoot rifles.

Unbveleivably, the concept was, a civilian militia, a DRAFT, a compulsory quantity of legs, who could shoot, maybe, with minimal training.

Riflemen arent too important in a modern army it seems.

Armed Miss America 1944 stops intruder Fri Apr 20, 8:16 PM ET

WAYNESBURG, Ky. - Miss America 1944 has a talent that likely has never appeared on a beauty pageant stage: She fired a handgun to shoot out a vehicle's tires and stop an intruder.

Venus Ramey, 82, confronted a man on her farm in south-central Kentucky last week after she saw her dog run into a storage building where thieves had previously made off with old farm equipment.

Ramey said the man told her he would leave. "I said, 'Oh, no you won't,' and I shot their tires so they couldn't leave," Ramey said.

She had to balance on her walker as she pulled out a snub-nosed .38-caliber handgun.

"I didn't even think twice. I just went and did it," she said. "If they'd even dared come close to me, they'd be 6 feet under by now."

Ramey then flagged down a passing motorist, who called 911.

Curtis Parrish of Ohio was charged with misdemeanor trespassing, Deputy Dan Gilliam said. The man's hometown wasn't immediately available. Three other people were questioned but were not arrested.

After winning the pageant with her singing, dancing and comedic talents, Ramey sold war bonds and her picture was adorned on a B-17 that made missions over Germany in World War II, according to the Miss America Web site.

Ramey lived in Cincinnati for several years and was instrumental in helping rejuvenate Over-the-Rhine historic buildings. She returned to Kentucky in 1990 to live on her farm.

"I'm trying to live a quiet, peaceful life and stay out of trouble, and all it is, is one thing after another," she said.

Quote from CaptainObvious:

My weapon of choice is the Mini-14. Hand guns are useless in a all out civil riot that AAA is eluding to. Frankly, I see that as a bit too paranoid, but being somewhat prepared is practical. I do agree that the radical left will make a run at gun control, which we all know really means confiscation.

Good choice Capt. I use an AR-15 with military sling, bayonet, and 30 round mag. You are also correct about the left using this as fodder for confiscation.

Interesting post. An original? You might want to expand on this, the list is infinite after-all.

My only question is, Who keeps you in check?

Good for her!!!!

This is exactly why we need to maintain the RIGHT to BEAR ARMS.

What happened at VT, is terrible. But, if we cannot protect ourselves, who will? There are evil people out there. There always have been, and there always will be. If someone wants to kill someone, they will, with or without guns. Just look at history before guns were ever invented.

As far as America goes: we didnt become the powerful nation we are, without guns. If we didnt have guns, or if you want to call it military power, basically the same thing, our chances of surviving other countries invading us would be small.

And as others have already said, we need guns to keep the government in check.

Criminals, politicians, sick people, etc..... will always be able to get guns, if they want them, legal or not. So, we must maintain our right to protect ourselves.

The VT shootings, are just a bad downside to protecting ourselves.

If you want to talk about safety, and downsides. Just consider, that thousands die everyday in car accidents. Driving a car is one the most dangerous things you can do. But, most of do it everyday. The are risks in life. Thats the way it is, and its not going to change. The number 1 cause of accidental death, is driving a car. More people are killed in vehicles than any other accident in the USA. That doesnt mean we are going to quit driving. It is just part of the risk of driving. We know it, as we know the mass murderers using what has made this country a strong nation, guns or military power, also have risks involved.

pamjoey, Just think of the lives that would have been saved if those poor victims at VT had been permitted to carry weapons onto campus to defend themselves. The perp would have killed the first two or so kids, but then about six handguns would have been emptied into the sonofabitch from the other students.

Maybe 30 or so lives would have been saved if innocent people had been allowed to defend themselves.

Government. At least that's what lots of people still believe.:D :D
