Is it possible to switch into a career in web development from being self taught?

ColdFusion was a server-side language that is no longer relevant today. That's why PHP replaced it in my learning path. I started this website over 20 years ago, so most of my learning has been related to my desire to create, maintain and upgrade this site.

I have a lot of friends who are web developers and there's never been one of them that has ever said to me that they don't have a job or any work as a freelancer. It more a matter of them choosing the opportunity they like the most.

Hey Baron - were you working full time when you were building this site and trying to learn web dev? Burning the midnight oil on evenings and weekends?
 
As one who has hit the boredom wall trading after 15 years full time, I have been looking at this as an option to change careers. I've looked at a couple of the bootcamps, and various online programs. Curious if anyone has a preferred path and/or resource. I like the online option as I could still make some income and shut down early to study. I've focused on edX and Coursera mainly, but would like to hear of other options if anyone has the time.

I have found Free Code Camp, Udemy (lot's of courses on web dev), and a class on edx called CS50. I'm leaning towards Free Code Camp (it's free) and taking an Udemy course in parallel.
 
If you are serious about switching careers, go to school and do a program.

Bootcamps are ok, do your research.

Online courses only, you better have an amazing github. Else you won't get a look at all to a 1st stage interview.
 
I quit cold turkey from another career and did the all-in deep dive, which is scary as hell but definitely the best and fastest way to learn. There's something to be said for hunger and desperation when you really need to accomplish something big.

The nights and weekends thing sounds good in theory but you must ask yourself how long it's going to really take you to learn all the required material at that pace.
