Too many people follow the news as their source about crime without taking a closer look at the details of the crime.
Retail Theft
As you can see via the below statistics...looting or someone coming in from the outside to steal underscores the real problem with retail theft even though looting is a problem in itself.
The bigger theft problem is internal theft by employees and management control of their inventories when merchandise is moved from one store to another or moved from wholesaler to retailer.
Yet, videos and stories on TV about looters are better news stories for TV and Social Media in comparison to theft by employees (an inside job...Ocean 12).
Return Fraud Statistics
Return fraud, which is not included in theft statistics... is almost NEVER a news story.
- States lost total $4.743 billion in taxes to retail return fraud in 2021.
- 37.9% of retailers report increased incidents of return fraud over 5 years.
- Return fraud represents about 10.4% of retail merchandise returns.
- 10.3% of in-store returns are fraudulent.
- Return fraud represents 10.7% of online sales.
- 10.1% of holiday returns are fraudulent.
In fact, 2 of the top 5 states are Republican states. Thus, it's not a Democrat or Republican problem with Missouri, Ohio and Tennessee expected to surge more by next year...we could possibly see 3 or 4 of the top 5 states in retail theft be Republican states.
It's a problem all over America regardless of state, city, or county (the chart below is billions per state in annual losses).
The fact is this. The United States has much more serious crimes (e.g. violent crimes) than Canada.
Thus, the U.S. has less time, energy, and money to convict/house thieves of petty theft...retail theft because its judicial system is becoming overwhelmed in dealing with other crimes that are much more serious.
The good news, AI will be merging with RFID to better track and identify thieves in 2025 assuming the Republicans do not stand in the way on new laws involving privacy issues coming to us...courtesy of Homeland Security.

A reminder, military personnel have been convicted and gone to prison (average of 3 years) for taking much less in the past 10 years in comparison to what Trump stole.

Crime is always good. Especially smash and grab and looting. It means the US economy has to make more stuff. Making more stuff keeps people busy. It is like sending stuff to the Ukraine to be blown up. Excess inventory dump. If you have too much stuff you have to get rid of it somehow.

Smash and grab, looting, etc. are crimes of the poor. They make the news because they're brazen and shock our senses of citizenry. Not excusing it, but the data provides perspective; more goods are stolen from employees, more scams are perpetrated online, more money is stolen from illegal kickbacks than petty criminality. I get it, we're less threatened by these crimes than risking our lives being at the wrong place at the wrong time when some petty thugs decide to rush the store we just walked in. But please, focus on law and order, not on the economic impact of petty criminality...
