Doc, 20/20 did an experiment of this kind a couple of years back, perhaps more recently. Shipped a container from the Middle East, Pakistan I believe, and it made its way into one of our harbors without being checked.

If security has improved to the point you believe it to be, then that's good. But that isn't what I have been hearing. When the issue of port security does come up, all I hear is that we're still very vulnerable.
 
I hear ya...I used to be really down on it too until a friend of mine who is a supervisor with Customs gave me the low down. My nature is one that I still have a hard time trusting what he says...but I deal with it.

I don't know how every container that enters our country on a daily basis can be checked, fancy equipment or not. I have my fingers crossed it's being done, though.

Well, finally you brought up an important point.

Let me ask you;
How much would it cost, to legitamately, with unbribed persons, check every container, every package, every migrating bird, for whatever is the potential nasty?

Next question, where are most international cargo vessels registered, and more importantly, why are they registered there?

Rather like the "war" on everything, you seem to hold dear, fact is you would be living in a bark hut somewhere if the true cost of these "excursions" into political , or practical conscientious objection were levelled at your doorstep, with some idiot threatening you with imprisonment if you didnt pay your taxes.

And agree with how they were being spent, though its a minor consideration, when every american pays over $1000 per year to "support the troops", one way or another.

I just want to point out, since hap is probably too classy to do it, that the guy you're berating served his country (at least that's my understanding). I'm not a huge fan of Bush, nor am I a fan of what the military action in Iraq turned into (please note that - turned into). However, I wanted to say that I hope you're not naive enough to believe that we don't need armed protection or that when proof is incontrovertible, we don't need to go out into the world and eliminate known threats to our freedom. We need it more than ever before. I didn't see it myself, but if you actually said that George Bush is more dangerous to us here in the West than the Radical Islamists, you deserve to get schooled.
 
Nuclear, and to leeser extent Bio and
Chem give off a signature. If a container leaves Iran and goes to Syria and then Korea before it comes to Port Hueneme you can rest assured they know about it.
