Is anyone trading the Nikkei 225 Mini?

Quote from kiwi_trader:

Its not full sized ... its part sized. Until the mini came out we regarded the SGX option as the "mini" (see my earlier post).

Re the indexes. A very reliable source tells me that IB offers what the Asian exchanges provide for them (they don't construct any composites) so WYS is What IB got.

The Nikkei Index is owned and compiled by the Nikkei
Shinbun(newspaper). TSE and OSE don't provide the
data. eSignal charges separately for Nikkei Index data.

Quote from Trader KGB:

Kiwi,

Do you know why IB (or the SGX) doesn't offer live data on the underlying cash indices ($STW and $SGXNK/Nikkei)? I asked one of the IB reps here on ET, he thought it might be an issue of the SGX simply not offering the data. I like to monitor the cash indices in real time, but can't do this with the $STW or $SGXNK (though I could with the latter if I subscribed to the OSE data).

I'd also like to have the ability to load up a historical chart of the STW index, but IB/SGX doesn't offer the data, and the web charting services don't carry the STW.

If you have Nikkei futures data from OSE, you won't miss
much without the Nikkei Index. The index updates only once
a minute and is usually within 10-20 yen of the futures contract.
The Topix Index updates every 15 seconds.

There's a guy in IB's Hong Kong office who
gets things done. I spoke to him mid-day
and late this afternoon IB's Japan data was
once more 100% accurate.

Data problem solved!!

Learner2007,

Thank you for your knowledgeable contributions.

One quick question, has there been problems with the OSE, during heavy trading, like halts, crashes, etc.? And when that happens, what do you use to hedge?

Thank you,
Schaefer

In my 35 years of trading in Japan I can't recall there
ever being a halt on the OSE. The OSE trades very little
stock. Futures are what keeps it going. And as I said
in an earlier post, OSE has installed new computers. So
no need to stock up on ulcer medicine!
TSE did halt trading last year as a precaution against a
possible crash. But they have increased capacity since then
and will replace their computer system in 2009. The TSE
will also install new omputers for futures trading next
January.

Hope this helps

For IB it's N225M. I don't know what it is for QT.

Hi, CHACHA420,

Just follow the QT symbols format:

Exchange: OSE.JPN

Symbol: JNM

Expiry Month: U7

So you would enter: OSE.JPN:@JNMU7

As for IB's TWS: N225M

You may have to create a time template for OSE for QT charts. Let me know, if you need further help.
