U.S. nets thousands in offshore tax crackdown

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Major progress is being made in a crackdown on international tax evasion, the U.S. Internal Revenue Service said on Thursday.

In a program that offers leniency in exchange for volunteering information about undisclosed offshore assets and income, the IRS said that as of this month it had collected $2.7 billion from thousands of U.S. taxpayers.

"We have pierced international bank secrecy laws, and we are making a serious dent in offshore tax evasion," said IRS Commissioner Doug Shulman in a statement.

"Not only are we bringing people back into the U.S. tax system, we are bringing revenue into the U.S. Treasury."

i have question-how much this program did cost to US tax payers? by this i mean salaries, benefits(future benefits included),expenses of ALL IRS agents,judges,prosecution,etc..everyone who was involved in it.
i'm pretty sure that after all there is will be no "profit" whatsoever. but hey..everyone is busy! saving jobs,right? just like with all other "wars"..again..there is some great "achievements" for fellow US citizens-great demonstration that no one is safe from long arm of US law,you have no freedom,no privacy whatsoever. nowhere in the world! Thank you US gvt!

how about instead of stupid fights on whatever- US gvt would try to just reduce their own expenses and spend less,simplify tax code, so the citizens don't have to come up with creative ideas? yeah..this is fucking hard..chasing some random people all over the world for a few bucks, just to piss those dollars away in some random shit hole like afganistan is much more fun, isn't? what a disappointment....a fucking police state,much worse than soviet union in their 70-80's..

"A tax crackdown by the United States has sent more than one million Americans and green-card holders living in Canada scrambling to figure out how to comply.

The move is part of a push by the U.S. Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to make sure U.S. taxpayers are paying what they owe on foreign accounts. Unlike most countries, the U.S. requires its citizens to file annual tax returns based on their worldwide income, regardless of where they live."
