Most every young man that signs up in time of war think they're doing do to fight for freedom and their country. Last time that was true was WWII. It's a difficult thing to realize you've been played for a fool, that your patriotism has made you a chump. That reality does not change the horror of war, and in some ways it magnifies it. Such is the reality of living in a country with a corrupt government run by criminally incompetent buffoons.
