i agree that the money should have been spent trying to reduce consumption and looking for more effeient alternatives. However, getting people to cut back on their consumption, would crush the fragile economy.

That's the point.
A gasoline engine can run successfully (and cleaner) on ethanol. A diesel engine can run successfully (and cleaner) on vegetable oil. Matter of fact, I read somewhere that Brazil has produced cars that run on alcohol for years. But what about the oil companies? Are they interested in alternative fuel? Doesn't look like. And given their history, they won't stop at anything (and I mean ANYTHING) to have things their way.

Hello 9999. Your right on about running on different types of fuel. Read the early history of Henry Ford. He wanted to produce a Model "T" car that would serve the common people by running on local produced fuel from farm crops.. somewhat like Brazil and NOT gasoline. I am old enough to also remember most farm tractor companies producing "LP" engines after WW2 and into the 1970's. Many of the big corperate farms ran farm engines on LP. (aka Liquid Propane) Those engines ran very clean. Engine oil would stay clean 10 times longer and result in less wear on moving parts. Longer engine life...
$2 Trillion would have gone a long way towards switching all the mechanical engines over. The hard part would be in switching "macho political" people... agpilot
