as ron paul correctly pointed out in a republican primary debate, the real problem there was carrying water for british oil interests in 1953
that created a permanent distrust of our embasies in Iran
i've got no problem with going after true enemies, but since WWII, the US citizen has had a real problem with 'allies' who goad us into doing their bidding
- for the british in 1953 in Iran
- for the french in viet nam
- for israel in the mideast since 1948
"heeeey, you got a nice military - how 'bout fighting our wars for us?"
No argument, however the regime that took the Shah's place is openly hostile to the US and there are probably a good number of Iranians who would like to be rid of a bunch of theocrats trying to control their lives. Is life better for them?
What is troubling about this whole matter (and I certainly am not an apologist for Israel) is the fear that Iran is going to keep popping off and get their wish.
