5M/second -> 200 ns per tick
If you're pulling off a network -> 5M * 100 bytes/message * 10 -> 5Gbps -> basically, you need a 10GbE fire hose. If you're pulling off local storage you're looking at 500MB/s bandwidth. That's...substantial.
I have something cooking in the lab that does in fact do this, but yeah, your point is valid, that is a "fairly high" standard.
