Internet Service during power outages

Quote from bs2167:

If I made 1/252 of my annual profits each day, then I probably would just shut it down to save the headache. However, that's not the nature of my pnl stream...it grinds, grinds, and then will have a handful of days a year where 5 - 10% of my annual take is generated. I don't want to risk missing those days...and if I can figure out a backup solution, there seems no reason to.
I hear ya, They have a study about just being long the S&P and how your account would have been affected if you were just flat 5 days. Of course most days it doesn't matter if you were in or out. But if you missed one of the big days there goes your return for the whole year.

Go to Wynn, The Palazzo or Caesar's sportsbook and forget trading for a few days.
no, I'm going to take my laptop hide out in my room and trade forex

If I hit it big, then I'll go down and shoot some craps

i have 2 big a**s UPS batteries and little netbook(consumes about 25w)-should be enough for couple days :)
but i'm going to take a day off. or trade really small size. there is will be no volume. at least on stocks

I do a lot of hosting and one of the datacenters I have servers in I've never experienced a full power outage at so I've never experienced a handoff between the grid >> battery >> generator.

I've warned all the clients that it may work or it may not.

Something else you have to consider is who your broker is. Are they going to be in their call centers and up and running?

Just take the day off. One of the golden rules/secrets of trading is that not losing money can be better than making money. Too much to risk during a hurricane IMO.

yeah, until you hear the story about the guy who made his fortune being short during the 2012 hurricane (or for that matter, long)

here are the top ways to access the internet IMHO

have a dsl and a cable line hooked up to a dual wan router and plug this all into a ups system

use your smartphone to trade (for emergency trading only - not scalping ES/CL)

use your ipad (you may be able to trade normal w/ this)

go to SBUX or anyplace w/ wifi w/ a laptop/ipad

or as another poster said just fly to the middle of the country and wait it out

I have a USB Wireless Broadband stick that I keep in my laptop for out on the road but it also works plugged into a desktop or any usb port.

I'm all with those who say take the day off. Never believe or rely on the weather man; they lie like obese 8 year olds vying for attention.

+1

Just wanted to make the same point. If your broker is down or unreachable none of the back ups do you any good....
