Hey all,

Got some general (somewhat newbie) questions about the internet and how it interacts with your pc.

1. Can anyone on the web see what websites I'm surfing? If so, how can I avoid that? I'm tired of getting unwanted e-mails from companies and advertisers who've somehow seen what sports games and online casinos I've been too.

2. Where else on my pc besides "temporary internet files"are the websites I've looked at stored? I delete the files from "temporary internet files" folder, but are there other areas?

anything you ever download stays on your hard drive.even if you delete it.i live in the town where gtw does their service work.we get a lot of news about people arrested for child porn on their computer.people send in their computer for repairs after they delete child porn off their computer thinking its safe.they dont know that its still on their hard drive and that computer manufactures are required by law to report it if they see it.

yes and no. not everything stays there forever. also, there are things you can do to make sure something is really deleted. there are programs out there for specifically this purpose.
 
Hi...I use Ad-aware Plus. It's only $15 bucks. You can get the
free version, also. The difference is, the paid version will
delete any advertising cookies as they appear while you're
online. With the free version, you'll have to do a scan each
time you go offline. Also, the paid version will monitor any software installations for spyware as you're installing. With, the
free version, you'll have to do a scan after the install.

i use ad-aware too, but that is only for spyware, etc. this is a completely different issue than deleting something an being able to recover it.
 
Well, there's 2 parts to his question, Gordon. As far as the
first question is concerned, I think Ad-ware would be helpful.
 
There are utilities that securely delete and format hard disks. They do this by writing zeros on the disk. Partition Magic 7.0 has a delete and secure erase option that does this for an entire partition.

yes, you're right, i apologize. i forgot this thread started with 2 separate questions. i thought you were implying that using ad-aware would stop someone from finding deleted files.
