Internet Explorer 7.0

i just discovered that if i turn off auotomatic detect settings in my lan settings section,then everything has speeded right up.not sure if anything will work proper but at least its fast again.:D
 
With this turning off, is it better than IE6? Still on IE6 as do not want to run into any problems. TIA
