I don't know much about computers and specs and requirements and such, so need some feedback.....

I'm wondering if a laptop with the new Intel i5 processor with the Intel HD graphics can run IB and QT smoothly.

Anyone using this combination (i5 processor/Intel HD graphics) with IB and QT?

Or, is a dedicated graphics card absolutely a must?

I think for the most part, trading applications are 2D only and most of the basic graphics functions will suffice. I read up on the specs on Intel HP graphics chip... seems to be better at the HD video, video streaming, 3D rendering, audio codec kind of stuff.

Besides using it for trading, do you heavily use it for playing DVD movies, stereo musics, playing 3D games, etc.? If the answer is no, then probably it wouldn't matter what graphics chips are used. (But it never hurts to have a high-end one to do the low-end tasks.)

Is this an option on the laptop? Because most laptops are pre-configured by the manufacturer.

Those are pretty lightweight applications - I'm not sure it's even possible to buy a new computer that won't run them "smoothly". Maybe a netbook...maybe....
