installing new motherboard, P4...

Is that FUN, as in "troubleshooting and you don't have clue what to do first"?

Gnome :D
Indeed, I used to get help from the internet for trouble shooting, but one time, I wanted to search for something on the net, and realised that my box was wide open with parts here and there ! Doh!!

Cheers!! :p

also if you have a cat lock it up in another room. Don't ask me why I know thats important :)
:D Very funny. :D
I've never had problems with static electricity but have heard of people that did including a component manufacturer that was frying a large number of their parts and didn't know why until they figured it was this.

Bracelet? Uuuuuuuu don't need no stinkin' bracelet!

As a tech I know it's not the thing to say, but I'll say it anyway. I never use a grounding anything. Over the years, I have built more computers than I care to think about. On and off carpets and rugs. And, also under the watchful eyes of many cats and dogs. I don't think you should worry to much about that type of issue here. Take your time, don't force the connections, and have some fun. It's ok to breathe while you put it together too! :)
Same here; never used a strap from 8086/8088 days forward. Just always touched the chassis before I picked up anything.

I hope IBM has unitized their assembly like Dell has, otherwise it could be a pain in the ass to put that board in. Nothing easier to build or work on then a clone.

I received a new motherboad and P4 chip from IBM today, and will install them tonight(to hopefully correct my much talked about on ET high cpu usage problem, which oddly enough, has not been a problem the last few days). The big concern with this kind of work is apparently toasting a part with a static shock. How likely is this? Should I get one of those grounding wires you attach to your person? Thanks.

Alan

just curious,

what do you think about the new Centrino, and the other newer
MB's and the anticipated 800 FSB's?

The Centrino is the new laptop/notebook standard (w/CPU & chipset) and it rocks. On systems with big batteries the life can be over six hours. Smaller, i.e. thinnner, systems also have a huge increase in battery life.

yup, just touch the chassis, or something metal to ground yourself and you should be ok. i tried wearing one of those anti static straps once and felt like a loser. heh ehhe :)

I think I have a dufus dog that's related to your cat! :D
I think I have pet rabbit :D that's related to your dog related to his cat. :( Ate my keybord wire, my mouse wire, my audio wire, my printer wire, my scanner wire & the cord to 300W halogen lamp  --and that was after making the place safe for him.

He got behind the computer one night and just had himslef a little ol' party chewing all the wires :p . (Things are much better now  but when the computer case is opened he goes in the bedroom w/ the door shut tight  .)
