Inflation pushes retiree back into workforce after 20 years: 'I need compensation'

I have entered semi-retirement where I am no longer prospecting new clients. I keep my brain active with a lot of trading and research with my personal money. Those things keep my mind alive and vital and I intend to do it until the day I croak.
I would assume that your first responsbility is then to your existing clients. So given the choice of something you really want to do vs looking after your client, you look after the client.
And in addition to mental stimulation, ageing people need daily physical activity. So I think its not such a bad thing for older folks to go back to work, especially since there is currently a labor shortage.
I agree that we need physical stimulation but there are so many options available that going back to work doesn't even show up on the list. I'd rather be commited to showing up for a tee time rather than a client meeting. Besides when I'm working I can't take a break if I get tired.

I have more respect and honor for a working mechanic, instead of a retired millionaire who does basically absolutely nothing.
I'm not actively working, per se. But I make more than a decent living trading from home. Most here on this trading forum and elsewhere would probably completely envy me, to be honest.
Yeah, and I own 8 private jets and 7 yachts thanks to the 10 minutes of trading I do every morning. After all, it's the anonymous internet where anyone can make up anything.

As for the millionaire, it depends. If they earned their money honestly, more power to them. If they were a politician who started out as middle class and ended up with millions due to insider trading, crafting laws that personally enriched them and getting involved in deals the general public had no access to, then I agree. Actually they should be in prison somewhere.

Envy a workaholic stranger online who shows zero respect for his family by referring to his retired parents as "lazy, brain dead, slobs with no purpose or function"?

No thanks.

I mean if you would observe them...they are essentially just rotting away. I tried to get them to work, have a job...purpose or function....but no. They are just too lazy, not interested or too proud to work. It's disgusting.

If you had two groups people, or students or kids....and one was productive, energetic and intelligent....and the other acted brain dead and lazy....which one would you respect more? Some people are more respectable and honorable than others. And I'm not ashamed to call my parents lazy, brain dead, slobs with no purpose or function....if I'm simply stating reality. I call it like it is. I'm not going to praise a dull, average, product....as Glorious and Spectacular.

So we can extrapolate by your statement that you are going to work full-time until the day you die? Not enjoy some free-time for yourself at end-of-life?

I'm not saying people should work like a workhorse or slave until the day they die, but still have a function or purpose for their lives and society. Have something going for you. Have vitality of purpose, mind and spirit and body. A dog's turd has more life vitality than them.
I feel like this is a couch therapy, venting, session. :vomit:

How old are you? Why don't you be a little more empathetic? Not everyone's created equal and certainly aren't endowed with same IQ or capabilities. By the time you reach your parents' age, you might be treated as a old fart yourself by some young idiots around you.

You and I must have different life philosophies and perspectives.
I, personally, find a working person honorable and respectable. Versus, someone who is either retired, lazy, or has no interests to work.

It's important a human being have a function, purpose, within a society. It keeps your mind, body, and spirit alive, functioning and sharp.
Similar to police and working dogs....they are the happiest and healthiest. Look at dogs in pounds, or neglected at home....they are just dieing a slow death inside and out.

That's not a popular viewpoint as you pointed out. I agree with you. I remember going on a walk with my dad when I was early in high school. We walked by a house and heard a couple arguing. He told me half jokingly, "The mass of men live lives of quiet desperation". That quote was borrowed from someone else, but it's really true. How many people don't like working? I personally find it fulfilling. If I didn't, I would do something else that was fulfilling. I have that option now because I made sacrifices earlier in life to give myself that optionality now. Sure, I could have had more leisure in college instead of spending a lot of Friday nights and weekends in the library, but it would have reduced my options later in life and I simply would not have found it fulfilling. I think a lot of people trade fulfillment for leisure or free time. I'm an INTJ. Maybe it's partially tied to personality types, who knows. But to spend roughly 1/3 of your life doing something you don't enjoy and do not find challenging or fulfilling, I think is sad. The idea of fulfillment doesn't just apply to some people. You won't achieve esteem and self-actualization, the top levels of Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs without it. It's possible to get fulfillment through achievement without a job. But having the objective of being able to sleep all day and not doing any kind of work someday is like an athlete having the objective to one day reach his or her ideal level of physical fitness and then at that point never exercising again.

Everyone is so eager to retire. I personally think retirement is vastly overrated....and depressing and boring.

I respected my parents more while they worked; but now in retirement, they look like lazy, brain dead, slobs with no purpose or function.
I tried to get them to work, but that's like trying to convince a religious person to switch religions.

Work OR getting a job? Big difference. Just don't try to change cat into hamster, it's ok that we are different.
