Inflation from Money Printing, Survival, or Greed?

...I was US Army military intelligence - OPFOR at Ft. Lewis and... other things, and I've seen how the sausage is made.)

So you, commie, got into this country and joined the military intelligence community, and learned how we make our sausage?

Oh, what sad times we live in! Did you pass yourself off as a humble landscaper as part of your subterfuge?

USA is doomed!

I posted some of the post below as a reply in another thread but I figured the topic might make a decent thread of its own, which is... Where have you noticed price increases that feel more like price gouging than just inflation caused by the standard money printing or supply chain excuses?

For me, it does feel like certain things are prohibitively more expensive than they used to be just out of greed, or perhaps trying to dig out of the Covid hole? I don't know.

Example... My wife and I went out to lunch the other day at a restaurant that's built right into the side of a local mall. And it's one of those places that serves a little bit of everything, and it wasn't busy at all like I remembered it to be in years past, so we're not talking about a situation where there are just so many more customers waiting around to be seated than there are seats to fill. When I saw the prices on the menu I was like WTF is going on? Examples:

Bacon Cheeseburger - $23
Crab Cake Appetizer - $25
9oz sirloin - $36
BBQ Ribs - $39
Sea Bass - $50
8oz Filet - $55

And even a side order of fries was $8. I mean, the whole experience felt like the biggest ripoff ever. We're not talking about Morton's steakhouse here. It's a mall restaurant for crying out loud.

Another massive ripoff I've noticed recently has been coffee shops. That same day my wife and I went out to lunch, we took a quick stroll around the adjacent mall afterwards. I haven't stepped foot in that place in about 4 years, and it was a total ghost town. As we were walking around, I stopped in Starbucks and got a large cold brew coffee... black. No sugar. No creme. No fancy latte bullshit or anything like that. The cost: $6.48.

Fast forward a few weeks later. I'm on the Gulf Coast of Florida at a Marriott hotel and they have a full-blown coffee shop and breakfast area beside the lobby. I order my usual large cold brew and lo and behold we set a new record. Grand total with tax: $8.00

Eight... friggin'... dollars... for a black coffee.

I work from home so 99% of the time I'm making my own coffee, cooking my own meals, etc, so I'm oblivious to what's going on in the outside world. So yeah, maybe it's just me living under a rock for so long that's the issue. Not sure.

Have you noticed that pricing just seems to be out of control in your area? If so, give an example.

somebody is living a high life. just sell one of your bitcoins, then ~$200 bill would be paid for :)

Are you certain of that? You may want to rethink your statement above.

I would strongly suggest that you reconsider your ability to read other people's motivations. A failure this abysmally abject should not be ignored.

P.S. I also note that you've attempted to dodge my actual question and slimily disguise that fact behind an insult. I get your embarrassment at being exposed as a fool, but you really don't want to get on this ride. The ticket charges would be much more than you can afford.

It would seem the present far-right in the U.S. is unique in modern history. The party members profess to believe in conspiracies that would require a series of low-probability, linked events to occur such that the overall probability would approach zero. What gets even weirder is they readily accept as true the most cockamamie tales one can imagine posted on social media. There can be no doubt that an element of pure lunacy is associated with far right politics in the U.S. today.

I don't think a comparable thing has ever happened in the history of the world in what would have otherwise been characterized as a "mainstream" political party. We have got to stop thinking of Republicans as mainstream and rational. The old GOP is dead. There is only one rational political party left in the U.S. One can assume democratic principles still hold and discuss policy on a rational basis with Democrats. That can no longer be said of Republicans who will no longer accept the results of elections, thus rejecting a corner stone of democracy.

It seems virtually all the rational Republicans remaining have distanced themselves from the official party. Although these outcast, former Republicans are still referring to themselves as "Republicans," I suppose it's only because they don't know what else to call themselves. The party name "Republican" has been co-opted by lunatics and fools. The party's acknowledged leader is a pathological liar days away from going on trial for bank fraud and is facing what appears to be certain indictment for felony charges. Nevertheless the ship of Republican fools sails on into the storm with stalwart party members willingly lashed to the mast. Why are we still treating the so-called "Republican Party" as though it were somehow a legitimate representation of anything other than blithering fools?

Half the population votes republican, to me they represent a shield against the asshole progressives. The only rational thing to do is be independent and never join a party, which is basically the same as a cult nowadays. So speaking of the progressive cult, just how in the hell any real trader can vote for them is beyond me, they offer nothing positive and mostly hate on us. Bernie's trader transaction tax was back lately, same old fucking zero sum bullshit that the left loves to push, my gain is ALWAYS at the expense of people who don't trade or even work in many cases. It is 'deeply unjust' that I might be doing ok when somebody somewhere is financially suffering, what a bunch of absolute bilge. Ironic when this thread started calling others greedy when democrats say we are the greedy ones. The left is by far the worst danger to a free and prosperous nation, I could make a long list.

Over 40% of liberals believe that US cops killed >1,000 unarmed in black men during 2019 - the real figure was around 20. People believe in 'long Covid' despite a variety of studies showing that it doesn't exist (https://www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/2022.06.07.22276108v1.full.pdf). Millions of people are giving booster after Covid booster to their young children despite conclusive proof that doing so is, statistically, far more dangerous than said children contracting Covid (https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=4206070).

And of course, only one of these groups has an iron grip of control over all US institutions.

What was your question? I recall you made a request and softened it with the word "please." I chose to ignore your request.

You've made your position clear. For that I thank you. I should, I suppose, point out a small error. Half the population does not vote Republican. It is actually less than half. This is, of course, why a number of recent Republican Presidents have been been elected by the Electoral College rather than the popular vote. In the U.S., currently, we elect only the Senate by popular vote. The President is elected by the Electoral College; the House by often heavily gerrymandered state districts which make the vote un-democratic. In Some states the House vote does approach a democratic (small "d") result; in others, however, it is anything but.

If we wanted to discuss this, and I don't see a reason why we should, we would have to start be agreeing that a "democratic vote" means everyone's vote counts equally.
