Inexperienced router consumer in the market for a new home router, suggestions?

I have one of their earlier models to boost the signal in other areas of the house but I am close to the router. I am getting 2x the downstream vs WiFi but more importantly no drops now.

40 mbps is way sufficient for what you are doing.
Getting 80 mbps or more will have no effect at all.
'mpbs' is not the speed per say, but the bandwidth, or the amount of data you can receive/send per second, not the speed at which you can receive/send them.

Yeah, tuning wifi to be "near" wired quality (not necessarily speed, but reliability) is a *crazy* challenge. Drop distance expectations dramatically (e.g. to <15 feet), make sure the equipment is *highly* compatible (about a 5% chance different radios "like" each other), and make sure there aren't obstructions. Otherwise you'll get the typical dropped connections and really lousy transfer rates. And on top of that... leave them stationary in a fixed-point config, don't expect to move the endpoints around. Don't forget to check for interference and change channels if there's a noisy environment... OMG it's a nightmare.

Probably not that much at all, but I figure if it's not going to break the bank you may as well have it. Bit like a protective put, yeah?
 
I got this today, ditched my MESH, and am getting 2.1 downstream. Incredible. I downloaded a 40Gb movie off the NGs and it took less than two minutes.

Good to know because in order for me to upgrade to 80 (which is only $10 extra bucks a month) they are apparently requiring me to buy a new modem ($150 one time charge) + pay for an install (another $150 one time charge).

The only thing I was really trying to improve - and it's only a very teeny tiny millisecond lag - is when I flip through my charts they don't update instantaneously, there's a very brief pause while a new symbol is being pulled up. It's not a big deal at all, but I thought if there was a way I could improve that - even slightly - that it was worth looking into.

i think if you run through different circuit breakers boards, this can get very slow. i found that my internet got faster when i removed it.
