Indian police arrest alleged kingpin of U.S. tax scam

Indian police said on Saturday they had arrested the suspected mastermind behind a call center scam run out of a Mumbai suburb that targeted thousands of Americans and netted more than $300 million.

Sagar Thakkar, 24, also known as Shaggy, was arrested at Mumbai's international airport in the early hours of Saturday after he flew in from Dubai, Mukund Hatote, a police officer on the case, told Reuters.

In October, the U.S. Justice Department charged more than 60 people in India and the United States with participating in the huge scam where call center agents impersonated Internal Revenue Service, immigration or other federal officials and demanded payments for non-existent debts.

The department said at least 15,000 people had been targeted by the telefraud that was run out of India.

YES! Thank you for nailing these guys! My phone was slammed by these guys for about a week or two, on two different occasions, beginning of last year, claiming that the IRS was going to sue me and arrest me because I owed money. I finally fought back by redialing them and turning the tables, and had those guys confess to the stupidest shit like, "Yes, we scam you Americans because you are all stupid and you cannot catch us."

I was livid. Anyways, as per my M.O. on stuff like this on the Wall St. News forum...

Fuggin' Scumbags!

Hope they rot in prison forever. Or be forced to listen to muzak forever. Or both! Hahaha!

Don't hold your breath Fedex. For a million bucks they will probally be running the streets again. likely.

For those that don't know it IRS doesn't call you threatening to sue you and arrest you. They usually mail you a letter or notice first. And if you don't respond then when they get really serious they just show up!

the story is hard to believe. that is 20K per person. people who can afford to pay 20K have an accountant to to deal with tax authorities.
 
This kind of scams are going to start going ballistic.

President Trump this week repealed the FCC’s online privacy rules, which would have required ISPs to get consumers’ approval before selling or sharing browser history with advertisers.

The regulations, part of the Federal Communication Commission’s 2016 Broadband Privacy Order, were issued during Barack Obama’s presidency.

But a new Republican government opposed the limitations, as made clear by recent Senate and House majority votes to eliminate them.

“President Trump has signed away the only rules that guarantee Americans a choice in whether or not their sensitive Internet information is sold or given away.

There is obviously no public support for this - this shows Trump and the Republicans serve only corporate & 1%er's - for the few that may not have figures that out yet. They were all paid a lot of $ by the ISPs for this - the Democrats voted against this. Republicans are a front for corporate America - they are 100% sell outs.

Typical argument towards anyone who is pro deregulation...It's some conspiracy and the 1% are behind it exploiting the public.. meanwhile most regulations create a barrier to entry for smaller firms causing the growth of big corporations.. but whatever you'll only believe what you want.. just a formal disclosure I am not pro Trump.. just making a point... Government regulation is not your friend
