So, now that it's all but official, and America will soon NOT be the land of the free, I'm curious what the community thinks about this.
In case you are unaware, this defense authorization bill, which among other things establishes appropriations for our military, wars, etc, has an extra provision attached...which every freedom loving American had better take note of:
NDAA S. 1867, contains a section titled 1031 which authorizes indefinite military detention of suspected terrorists without protecting U.S. citizensâ right to trial.
The first thing you need to realize with this component of the act is it transfers judicial authority from civilian courts to military tribunals, in matters of terrorism. The second thing you should be aware of is this, if you, as an American citizen are critical of the government, you may be labeled a terrorist, stripped of your Constitutional rights, and disappeared. It's that simple. No right to challenge your detention. Your family has no idea what happened to you or where you are. Just gone with no recourse whatsoever. Once the label is applied, its over.
Here are excerpts from a letter penned by 40 lawmakers who seem to realize what this act portends:
The Senate-passed version of the NDAA, S. 1867, contains Section 1031, which authorizes indefinite military detention of suspected terrorists without protecting U.S. citizensâ right to trial. We are deeply concerned that this provision could undermine the Fourth, Fifth, Sixth, Seventh, and Eighth amendment rights of U.S. citizens who might be subjects of detention or prosecution by the military.
One signer, Rep. Martin Heinrich (D.-N.M., above left), stated, "I strongly oppose mandating military custody and allowing for indefinite detention without due process or trial. These provisions are deeply concerning and would risk putting American citizens in military detention, indefinitely. In short, this authority is at complete odds with the United States Constitution."
According to Senator Levin, Chairman of the Armed Services Committee, this is all Obama:
"The language which precluded the application of Section 1031 to American citizens was in the bill that we originally approved ... and the administration asked us to remove the language which says that U.S. citizens and lawful residents would not be subject to this section."
I say this is the gravest threat ever posed to American citizens in our entire history. The enemy, it seems, is inside the gates. I would now like to hear from the Obama supporters. How do you explain this?
