I don't want to judge a book by its cover, but this guy hitting the 76-year-old Asian man yesterday in Oakland, CA doesn't seem to be an avid reader or Trump supporter.

I think you're missing the point...there's an
escalation (sudden increase above the norm) of violence against Asians that law enforcement have specifically stated such escalation occurred soon after the rhetoric of Donald Trump and others on social media.
- I never stated "Trump Supporters" were causing the escalation. Simply, not sure what point you're making with your reference to "...Trump Supporter".
Also, someone here at ET posted a statistical chart correlation about the escalation in violence and the use / reference to the phrase on social media...if I can find it...I'll repost it.
Further, I remember early in the Pandemic I subscribe to the BBC news channel...they actually had a documentary special about "wet markets" in China right before Trump gave a rally I think was in
June at a "youth rally" in Phoenix, Arizona. That offensive phrase originated on Youtube but it was not popular...
Yet, Trump in fact did
popularize the use of the phrase in June although I first saw the phrase used by someone on Youtube in late January that was criticizing Asian American's eating habits...joking about
"bat soup" in Chinatown's across America.
The reference to
Bat Soup quickly begin to be used but there wasn't an escalation of violence soon after its use on social media.
Soon...it took a world leader (e.g. Trump) to use the phrase
Kung Flu Virus (probably thought it was a cute derogatory name) because he saw his numbers in the poll declining and it became popular soon afterwards with his support base.
- Simply, he continue using the phrase even when Asian Americans denounce its usage and it briefly was a trending hashtag.
It took him and a few other notable people in the White House awhile to stop using the phrase prior to switching to "China Virus". Yet, the
damage was done especially as the economy deteriorated, rich got richer from the markets and poor got poorer because of lost jobs.
Essentially, Asian Americans became the
scapegoat for the poor handling of the Covid-19 response by the Trump / Pence administration by assholes regardless if they were Republicans or Democrats...rich or poor.
Anyways, the trouble maker has been fired from the Oval Office but the problem (escalation)
still exist after he packed his bags and exiled to Florida. As stated many months ago...I expect the escalation to get worst until the Pandemic is over.
