So in this new economy all you need to do is post videos on your latest fashion purchases and over night you become an instant millionaire, simple as that. Imagine what the future economy holds for all the teenagers out there now, I doubt any of them want to punch a clock and work in retail or some restaurant waiting tables when they can get all their success online doing videos, I mean all you do is just amass about a few million followers, throw a video or 2 up on your page every week, get few million views which is simple since there are a couple of billion people online and start collecting from all those 15-30 second advertisements on your page that ZERO people pay attention to.

    Amassing millions of fans on YouTube really does pay off.

    Zoe Sugg — or "Zoella," as she is known on YouTube — has paid more than $1.4 million for a five-bedroom home in Hove, East Sussex, according to the Daily Mail.

    Sugg, 24, has more than 7.3 million fans on her YouTube channel, where she posts style tutorials and videos showing off her latest purchases.

    She has created a line of beauty products, published a best-selling book, and now she has her own house, which she will be sharing with fellow YouTuber and boyfriend Alfie Deyes.

Not quite. It helps to be reasonably good looking, young, and be able to post new, interesting content. That would eliminate a large percentage of the population. Ever heard of the song, "Video Killed the Radio Star"? You need more than just a good voice to become a popular singer.

 
Yep. It happens. There's a guy who lives quite close me he who is a 'youtube celeb' and famous for playing video games on youtube! What a life!!! :) Very young guy.
He's earnt more money than the girl in the story, too!

Thing is, like most things, most won't be able to succeed at it.
If you're a girl, you need to be fairly good looking, otherwise people won't subscribe.

Sorry S2007S. But based on most of the stories you submit, you seem to be stuck in some sort of golden era from the past where new ideas and business models are automatically considered absurd or ridiculous in some way. I hate to tell you, but kids these days don't give a flying flip about network TV. My 9 year-old son hasn't watched a show on network TV in years. But he and all of his friends are constantly watching vides on YouTube. So guess where all the advertising money is going?

If the girl in your story has 7.3 million followers, that is a serious audience and there's no way she would be making great money through ad revenue share on her videos if she wasn't providing interesting entertainment to her viewers and a huge targeted audience for her advertisers. If zero people were paying attention to the ads preceding her videos, then I can assure you that her advertiser base would vanish quickly.

And if you think it's simple to make millions on videos these days, then go ahead and throw some up of your own and watch what happens. It's nowhere near as easy as you think because the barrier to entry is virtually nothing for the competition to post similar and better videos. Anybody who is making serious money consistently on YouTube is busting their ass on a daily basis.

I thought in this day and age we were past all that talk about how someone has to be good looking to be a star....you know being all politically correct

I know all about where content is heading, TV isn't what kids watch these days, they have the content with them anywhere they go with phones and tablets. In 5-10 years or so all content will be seen online and thats where its going all right now...I know its different today than just 5 years ago and Im sure in the next 5 years it will be quite different than it is today but to think how many people now make their money posting content online, most of these youtube stars are heading to TV and have movie and tv deals, they are getting paid tens of thousands of dollars from advertisers to stick their brand in their videos...how many people pay attention to those online ads that appear before a video? I have my error write on the spot where it says skip this add in 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, Its actually annoying now, sometimes advertising is 2-3 mins long, I remember you tube had zero commercials before watching any video, those again were the good old days on the internet, today every video has some type of advertising content before you can watch the video you want to watch....today most you tubers bust their ass to make content because they know its now a competition to compete with an ever growing saturated market....wait I forgot most you tube stars now have a team of interns writing their stuff pushing out new ideas, a crew of writers and IT guys they have advertisers paying them thousands of dollars to do stupid stuff to sell a jar of pickles or a pair of shoes...they have camera and editing guys behind the scene getting the perfect picture and angle.... its not the individual behind their webcam any more like it was years back when they just sat in their bedroom posting a simple video and earning a little something here and there...
