Jem keeps pointing to Sweden's COVID database and portal while trying to push wild speculative claims on how Sweden is doing so much better than Europe.... yet he doesn't even understand their reporting system has effectively been down for two weeks and they are not even reporting case data.

Sweden’s digital registry for Covid-19 cases was forced to close on Sunday for “security reasons,” having shut down only two weeks ago as a result of a hacker attack.

Labs and doctors across the country are still unable to report new cases on the SmiNet database, according to a statement from the the Public Health Agency. The registry also closed in late May after several hacking attempts were discovered, but the agency hasn’t said whether there was a breach of sensitive data.

The shutdowns come at a sensitive time for the agency and the Swedish government, which are basing decisions on easing restrictions partly on data stored in the SmiNet system. The May incident was followed by a week without any updates on Covid-19 cases, and the data subsequently presented was incomplete.

The Nordic nation has seen a steep decline in cases and hospitalizations, having suffered a heavy toll during the first wave of the pandemic and coming under fire for refusing to implement strict measures adopted by many other countries.

THE speed and severity of the Covid-19 pandemic has caught the world completely off guard. Even though the scientific community has warned of just this possibility — multiple movies have been made based on the premise — we think few really expected the pandemic to hit us as hard as it did, much less prepare for it.

Still, the majority of governments reacted in a relatively similar fashion, the intuitive way, which is to implement varying degrees of lockdowns to contain the virus spread and, at the same time, mitigate the impact with massive relief and stimulus measures.

Back in December 2020, we wrote about the lockdown stringency measures implemented in different countries and their effectiveness in curbing the virus spread, which is also influenced by the people’s self-discipline, cultural background and behavioural practices.

One country, though, stands apart from the rest of the world —Sweden. And its experience will provide a good case study for the history books.

As we all know, Sweden eschewed lockdown measures and face mask mandates, opting instead for voluntary social distancing and precautions. Its health experts believed that lockdowns are unsustainable and that evidence for masking is weak.

The country chose the unorthodox strategy — even if it did not publicly acknowledge it — to achieve herd immunity through community infection instead of waiting for vaccines.

More than a year later, statistics indicate that the country remains very far from achieving herd immunity, despite having one of the highest numbers of positive cases relative to its population in the world. Clearly, community infection does not work.

While its number of cumulative deaths as a percentage of population is lower than that in some other European countries such as Spain, Italy, France and the UK, it is far higher than that in Scandinavian neighbours Finland, Denmark and Norway, which are more comparable in terms of population profiles (see Chart 1).

Although the country has since tightened some restrictions —such as visitor limits at shops and public venues, shorter opening times for pubs and restaurants, and limited face masking on public transportation — overall stringency remains low. A case in point: Retail and recreational mobility are comparatively high (see Chart 2).

There is a lot of ongoing debate on how governments should find a balance between savings lives and preserving livelihoods. It is interesting to note that in Sweden’s case, despite choosing not to implement lockdown measures, its gross domestic product and unemployment rate did not perform noticeably better than its neighbours (see Chart 3).

In conclusion, Sweden’s contrarian approach to the pandemic is a valuable experiment — it proves that herd immunity cannot be achieved by allowing community infections. That only results in higher case numbers and a greater death toll, and prolonged economic hardship. The only way to achieve community immunity — and therefore, a return to our way of life — is through rapid mass vaccination.

Mathematical models were used to determine how many lives would be lost with no lockdown versus how many lives would be lost because of a lockdown.

I posted data about such much early in the pandemic and do not care to post it again.

Yet, I will say the following that I copied...

My only issue with mathematical models is that they don't predict how the world will react after lockdowns and restrictions are removed and its something I discussed before...

• Increasing unemployment rate, decreasing GDP, increasing crime rate, increasing mass shootings, increasing suicides / mental illnesses and many other things.

Those models did not predict which of the above will occur and which will not. Each country has different dynamics and some countries were using models by other countries.

• Pandemics are evolving during the pandemic and there are no 00% answers. The unexpected will happen and the expected will not happen.

Governments public health policy use models to determine which will have the better outcome...to take action or not take action. As for Sweden...not sure what model they used but I'm sure they didn't blindly follow one man's plan...the plan of Tegnell.

They did not think they would have excessive high mortality rate, they underestimated the infection rate among of vulnerable such as the migrant workers, healthcare workers, ethnic communities, citizens with underlying medical conditions.

I don't know what mathematical models that Sweden used but whatever they used...they were wrong and have now admitted it was failure...

That's all in the past now and only an idiot will keep debating about "what could / should have happen" had countries done something different.

Sweden did it differently and they lost. The ironic part...they still ended up using "strict restrictions" to manage Covid with the help of vaccinations soon after they admitted Natural Herd Immunity had failed without actually admitting they were using Natural Herd Immunity policy.

• Sweden now see the results in their declining Covid numbers...vaccination herd immunity and strict restrictions were in fact the right choice but too many died that didn't need to die for Sweden realized what worked.
