Hospitals in the Swedish capital are struggling to cope with a surge in new cases of COVID-19 after seeing an increase of around 75 patients requiring hospital care since the end of last week, the local authority said on Monday.
The number of new cases has surged across the Nordic nation in recent weeks, rising past peaks hit during the spring, although a huge increase in testing since the pandemic struck early in the year makes comparisons difficult.
Sweden’s biggest region, Stockholm, is again among the areas hardest hit by infections and hospitalisations after a spring and early summer when it accounted for well over a third of the country’s more than 6,000 dead in the pandemic.
“We can see today a large increase in the number of patients who have become so ill with COVID-19 that they need to be treated in hospital,” Bjorn Eriksson, the director of healthcare for the region of Stockholm, said in a statement.
“The pressure on our front-line hospitals is significant.”
There were 349 COVID-19 patients being treated in Stockholm hospitals and geriatric wards on Monday, up from 273 on Friday, the region said. Other areas, centered around cities such as Gothenburg and Malmo, have also seen hospitalisations mount.
The percentage of tests coming back positive has also climbed in a country that gained international attention for a strategy that rejected lockdowns and still mainly relies on voluntary social distancing recommendations.
In Stockholm, 20.3% of the about 42,000 people tested last week were shown to be infected, up from 16.3% in the previous week and 8.4% in the week before that, a spokeswoman for the region’s Karolinska University Hospital said.
Sweden registered 4,697 new coronavirus cases on Friday, the latest in a string of new record daily increases.
The country has seen a higher number of cases than its Nordic neighbours since the start of the outbreak and a far higher number of deaths in relation to the size of its population, though fewer than countries such as Spain.

Keep in mind that Sweden only reports data on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays -- as outlined earlier. Therefore their Tuesday reports on cases and deaths account for a 3 day period. Saturday, Sunday, and Monday.

Sweden, whose soft-touch virus approach has placed it in the global spotlight, recorded new 15,779 COVID-19 cases on Tuesday as a resurgent pandemic stretched testing to the limit in many hard-hit and densely populated regions.
The increase since the Health Agency’s previous update on Friday compared with a 10,177 case jump for the corresponding period last week. Cases in Sweden, which does not publish data over the weekend or Mondays, have repeatedly hit daily records over the last two weeks.
“We can see that the increase is evident in all age groups,” Health Agency official Sara Byfors told a news conference.
“Like the other curves, deaths are also heading higher, though not as steeply yet.”
Sweden also tightened recommendations for three more regions on Tuesday, meaning inhabitants in 13 out of 21 regions now are advised to work from home, avoid public transport and limit social interaction outside the family as much as possible.
Several regions are struggling to keep up with demand for testing even as it hit a record last week, forcing authorities in the biggest cities and hard-hit areas such as Ostergotland to restrict bookings amid a scramble to raise capacity.
“We are in a period where we have difficulty getting supplies of, above all, chemical reagents that we need to analyse the tests,” Rickard Lundin, a member of the Ostergotland healthcare task force, said.
“We have received signals from our suppliers that it is difficult to come by this material nationally right now.”

More Covid-19 patients in hospital
The number of people testing positive for coronavirus is increasing in the Stockholm region. Last week, 20.3 percent of everyone who got tested had confirmed Covid-19, writes the DN newspaper. That figure was 16.3 percent and 8.4 percent in previous weeks.
A total of 349 Covid-19 patients were receiving hospital treatment in the Stockholm region on Monday, which is a significant increase compared to Friday when the same number was 273 people. During the outbreak in spring, around 1,100 patients were in hospital at the same time.
In Västra Götaland, 146 Covid-19 patients are in hospital, an increase of 50 in a week.
In Skåne, 111 Covid-19 patients are being treated in hospital. Skåne was comparatively less hit by the outbreak in spring than many other big city regions, so this is the highest number since the start of the pandemic.

Sweden extends corona support for businesses
The Social Democrat-Green government and its partners in parliament, the Centre and Liberals, have agreed on new measures for businesses hit by the pandemic.
This means that furloughing support will be extended until June 30th next year, seven months.
The business transition support scheme for businesses that have lost at least 50 percent of revenue compared to last year, will be extended to cover August, September and October. A similar scheme for sole traders – if your revenue was more than 200,000 kronor last year, will also be extended to August, September and October.
Businesses can also apply to the Tax Agency to defer certain tax payments for a year.

PM Stefan Löfven tests negative for Covid-19
Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Löfven and his wife have ended their corona self-isolation, after testing negative and consulting with a doctor, his press secretary said.
Löfven went into isolation last week after a person in his vicinity had met someone who later turned out to have Covid-19, although Löfven himself was not ill. He isn't the only party leader taking that precaution.
On Sunday Ulf Kristersson, leader of the Moderates, went into self-quarantine after one of his co-workers tested positive, and the Centre Party's Annie Lööf did the same after a co-worker experienced cold symptoms. Neither of the two politicians have symptoms.

Sweden extends corona support for businesses

The reality is Ontario has already pretty much contained the second wave while closing none of our schools and only using targeted temporary 28 day restrictions on indoor dining and gyms. While 1000-1300 cases a day us not ideal it's far lower then Sweden/Florida and no worse then California ( in fact, yesterday you had a spike in cases that exceeds our levels ).
I don't know what the point is in misleading readers by saying Covid is exploding in Canada. I suppose you could make a case that there are troublesome areas short term in Western Canada, and Quebec for some reason has worse numbers then Ontario at all times. However, there is no point to it.

We both know Canada has growing coronovirus infections / deaths but its not exploding.
I'm not sure about your background here in Canada but here's a little of my background. I live in the Québec province. Yet, I also own a 2nd home in Chicago (Evanston area), Illinois...grew up there.
In addition, I have family in both United States (Illinois, South Dakota, Arizona) and South France that work in the hospitals plus my girlfriend is an ICU nurse here in Québec, Canada.
Thus, I have a vested interest in both Québec, Canada, United States and France especially via the fact my children attend school here in Québec. Schools are open, stores are open, gyms are open but I'm not a member of one because I workout at home...waterfront is open near my home.
- Impact on the kids is the cancellation of many fall/winter sports with the hope that the same will not happen to the coming spring sports. One of my kids chess / debate team active...they just do it differently now.
Yet, Québec via all my relatives in the medical field that lives outside of Canada...they are outside looking in...to them it is NOT exploding and anyone that used that phrase with you is a bullshitter / liar.

In comparison, United States still has its Thanksgiving later this month and they are in fact exploding with infections, hospitalizations and deaths prior to Thanksgiving...all of this going into the infamous Flu season that scientists and health officials have been warning for many months now...United States population did not take serious...that's the bad news.
Good news is that they now have a new President in the United States and he's more pro-life (I'm not talking about babies) about the Coronavirus.
Note: I'm unable to find my hospitalization chart of comparison between the 3 below countries but its similar to the infections chart with one big exception...United States is going exponential (exploding). Hopefully for France, United States and Canada...that does not happen.
