They won't do another lockdown because they know more about Covid-19 and how Canadians are responding to the Pandemic.
Instead, they'll do more restrictions and more fines. If that doesn't work...they'll go back to their earlier tactic that worked very well and helped with the declines via publicly calling out the violators and making them an example along with putting their faces on TV like some tabloid.
I remember one particular live news conference...the Premiere specifically named specific bars, restaurants as violators of the Health Canada guidelines including showing video verification of the places...he then stated
"This is outrageous and this is not Canada...these people should be ashamed of themselves".
Also, I do remember the Premiere stating all options are on the table to prevent a situation like in the
United States. In fact, he specifically stated "arrests" were on the table too as one of the option. Yet, right now they're relying on the citizens (public) to do the right thing...
If the public doesn't do the right thing...they'll quickly try those other options.
As for the Lockdown...it was a
big success because it gave time for the hospitals to become prepare because they knew there was going to be a 2nd wave, gave time for them to find / partner with a therapeutic drug name
Remdesivir back in late July and educated schools & children so that the infections in schools would be minimized.
- Lockdowns are not a vaccine nor cure. Its a mechanism to become prepare and to save lives (minimize deaths) while becoming prepare and to learn more about a new infection.
The latter above is very true via the example of the Flu. We don't need to do a lockdown for Influenza because its not new, we have a vaccine and we have multiple different FDA approved therapeutic drugs.
In comparison, the first known Influenza Pandemic...there was a lockdown and now look how far we become from that very first lockdown (early 1900s) in dealing with the Flu although people still do die from the Flu. That Pandemic spooked the world because its primary target was killing off children although older people were victims too.
- My great-grandparents had 5 children. Three of their children were killed by the first Influenza Pandemic. Further, the entire military base was on lockdown...many soldiers died too.
Just as important, the lockdown minimized the border transportation of infected individuals from the United States into Canada although there's a trickle of that still occurring by wealthy people that can simply fly in on their private jets.
I don't think they could have done the above in a timely fashion without a lockdown.
For example, the schools my kids go to are also used for summer schools. The lockdown shut down the summer schools and day camps used at the schools so that the schools can become properly prepared for the fall academic year going forward.
Another example, the lockdown allowed the government more time to train / hire more people that specially learn how to deal with keeping the elderly safe in nursing homes / long care home facilities...including doubling or tripling their pay so that they can live off one job without needing to have multiple jobs.
It was identified that the low pay jobs
prior to the Pandemic encourage many to have multiple jobs at different nursing homes...resulting in easy spread among the elderly and among elderly not in nursing homes.
Canada is very good in finding / outing out the trouble makers that refuse to follow Health Canada guidelines. The public is tired of the restrictions but find it necessary and will out a neighbour if needed.
Canada has recently (past week) given an app to citizens that gives us the ability to do our own contact tracing so that we can stay away from those that are infected or be more careful around them. Also, within the past week...several websites now allow us to see which stores, une école (schools) and other businesses with infections.
An example of the public now being more pro-active again to stop the spread of Covid-19...I went up to my condo at the ski resort and there was a notice on my door and on the doors of everyone else at the ski resort by the resort association reminding residents that social gatherings beyond the residents of the condo are
not allowed.
They even gave a phone number to report violators along with notifying us that within the next week there will be a Covid-19 testing site setup for residents only to be tested...appointment only. I checked my mailbox there and had three different brochures from Health Canada about how to stay safe and not let the guard down.
In contrast, I discussed the above with my mother in the United States and with friends in the United States...they've not received anything (not even a brochure) in the mail from their government about Covid-19 and how to be safe...
nothing.
Simply, Canada will do whatever it takes to
not become like the United States. Canada is getting back to
listening to the scientists after letting its guard down about 1 1/2 months ago.
