Sweden’s state epidemiologist Anders Tegnell has announced a record daily high of coronavirus cases for the second consecutive day. 812 positive COVID-19 tests were reported during the prior 24 hours, taking the overall total to 17,567. Tegnell had previously insisted on several occasions that the spread of the virus was slowing.

The country has come under fire from scientists in Sweden and around the world for its relatively relaxed approach to tackling the virus compared to other European countries.

More than 2,000 deaths in Sweden
Following an additional 131 deaths reported in the last 24 hours, Sweden’s COVID-19 death toll now stands at 2,152. The numbers were given at the latest daily coronavirus press briefing from the Swedish Public Health Agency.

The Swedish Public Health Agency said it was “clear” that the number of deaths in Sweden this year will be significantly higher than during a regular flu season. During weeks 13 and 14 of 2020, there were approximately 1,000 additional deaths above the expected amount.

“There have been more deaths than expected. It is definitely not over. We see that especially in the small rise in Stockholm again,” said Tegnell. The jump in positive cases comes just 48 hours after the controversial withdrawal of a report that suggested 600,000 Stockholm residents will have been infected by May 1.

The Swedish Public Health Agency made international headlines yesterday by estimating that one-third of Stockholm residents would be infected with the coronavirus by May 1. Less than 24 hours later, the Agency has taken a dramatic u-turn and withdrawn the report.

The decision was announced via Twitter: "We have discovered an error in the report and so the authors are currently going through the material again. We will republish the report as soon as it is ready."

Another Swedish report on the coronavirus spread in the capital has also been withdrawn by its authors. The preliminary findings by researchers at Karolinska University Hospital and the Karolinska Institute estimated that at least 11 out of 100 blood donors in Stockholm had already developed antibodies to the coronavirus.

Sweden's relatively relaxed approach to controlling the spread of the coronavirus has come under fire in international media and from many locals in the capital Stockholm, where more than half the country's deaths have been recorded. Now, 22 researchers have publicly criticized the strategy and called on politicians to make changes.

Harsh criticism from research scientists
In an opinion piece published today in Dagens Nyheter, the group of researchers from a range of top Swedish universities and research institutes make harsh criticism of the Swedish Public Health Agency and their present coronavirus strategy. They say that elected politicians must now intervene with "swift and radical measures."

The researchers say the agency has claimed on four different occasions that the spread of infection has levelled out, despite evidence to the contrary. They point out the slowdown in infections and deaths in Finland, which has implemented much more restrictive measures.

The Swedish government is fessing up that the entire response is pretty much a disaster... and stronger measures are necessary. The response in Sweden widely spread the disease increasing the deaths while bankrupting the economy & businesses as well. Sweden was able to create the worst case scenario in both public health and the economy due to their failed policy.

There are sayings such as "if you took all the economists in the world and placed them end to end they would still not reach a decision." Or similarly, "if you ask four lawyers for advice you will get eight different opinions."

Surprise, surprise that is so for epidemiologists as well.

Yet we get repetitive posts here saying basically that we should just listen to the epidemiologists and not weigh in on any matters because they are the ones who have it all figured out.

There is no hope for death and destruction from me. All I have hoped for is the best public health policy that allow us to open for business in face of a deadly pandemic as soon as possible. Nothing would reek move havoc on the economy than a failed pandemic response which allows COVID-19 to overwhelm society so nothing can be re-opened for many months rather than in a mere two months.

The facts and information fully back my assertions. Fortunately most states in the U.S. are following the best guidance that align with a 60 day lockdown and a staged approach to re-opening along with wide-scale testing with contact tracing.

It is unfortunate for the residents of Sweden and Brazil that their governments have used them for experimenting with failed COVID-19 response policies that do not align with international recommendations. Hopefully their governments correct their policies as soon as possible to minimize the public health & economic damage that is being inflicted with their current ruinous policies.

I have provided plenty of links to scientific and factual information in my posts.

Aligning with expert advice and historical proof regarding pandemics is the best path forward.

The variation of responses by country in the current COVID-19 pandemic does serve one purpose however - it will act as very useful cases studies of very successful (Germany / South Korea) responses versus completely failed (e.g. Brazil) responses to a world-wide pandemic. This will serve future generations very well since they will have first-hard results in a globally connected world (with air-travel, etc.) regarding the effectiveness of responses.
