COVID sent a lot of folks over the edge. I know some personally, and they are anxiety-ridden, fear driven lunatics that I had previously thought were normal, even high functioning individuals. I suspect the same thing happened to GWB.
Additionally, many of these individuals can see now how utterly mistaken they were, but as is the case with many issues nowadays, they are doubling down rather than freeing themselves of the stupidity by saying "I misjudged - I thought it was far more dangerous based on what I was seeing/reading." But some folks are just so stubborn they will go to their grave claiming they were right. Show them the blue sky and they will still scream "That's not blue, its green!!"

You do realize the foundational purposes of government as outlined by our founding fathers including forming a national military and preventing the spread of disease via public health practices put in place by the government (including quarantining of ships, etc.) as two of the starting points.

Let's take a look at a chart of excess deaths during Covid of a few countries around the globe. These are not deaths that "would have happened no matter what". These are deaths related to Covid -- many of them since the date vaccines available in early 2021 were completely preventable.
