I've listened to Imus on and off for thirty years. In the old days, young, drunk, coked up, he was hilarious. Even at 65 there is a twinkle in his eye. The Reverand Billy Sol Estes, I can't rememeber the rest of the characters, oh, Sal Monella... I remember some broad calling in "Imussssssss eymmmmm naaaaaakiiiiiiiiiiiiid." "I hear ya baby". The commercial at the time was a woman "did you hear what he said THIS morning???!!??".
Remember, at the time, It was just am, fm, TV. Really, no cable. He has really brought himself a long way. Instrumental in Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. No, he doesn't cause it, he raises money for it. Has a Cattle Ranch and brings kids w/Cancer to it. Was instrumental in straightening out Walter Reed mess, and got the GI's KIA 100 grand instead of 10, or whatever. He's become too liberal for me, but I still laugh at the irreverance.
Regardless of what he said, or how he said it, he's been saying it for years, and nobody ever said boo. Jeff Greenfield asked him as much today. "In all this time, with all of these influential people being on, did anyone ever tell you you were going too far w/the race thing?." "NO". There.
Now, these knuckleheads can raise all kinds of hell. If they got their way, and they won't, no money for the Ranch, no SIDS money, nobody to take the baton for the GI. And the black people will be villians again. But, rich people watch him, and get to be on the radio and TV. Imus will be back, no question. Rutgers girls don't even know who he is, but somebody Coached them all about it. If you're on these boards, you trade, or pretend to. You're opinionated, and you've pissed people off. Somebody, or many somebodies, called you much worse than "nappy headed hoes". did you get over it?
Black people. Wanna listen to Sharpton and Jackson? They're doing a great job, for themselves!!!!!. Here are the headlines in the PBPost. You can see them on line. "Ak47's weapon of choice in local gangs." "Drive by shooting in Lake Worth High wounds 20 year old student". "Three killed, six wounded in gangland style shooting". "Mourners afraid to attend shooting victims' funeral for fear of violence." And Sharpton wants me to believe, "nappy headed ho's " is a fucking problem? Rake in the dough, Al. You're doing great. It's a disgrace. And anybody who has that "black section" of a community knows exactly what I'm saying.
Maybe Chris Rock said it best. "Martin Luther King was a man of peace. But if you go on any MLB blvd in any city in America, you'll see more violence than you've ever seen in your life." And I can't stop it, and you can't stop it, and Don Imus can't stop it. Only the Black Community can stop it. I hope they do. But I haven't much hope.
