Actually earlier Visas required a sponsor that was an individual to assume social responsibility for the immigrant. The sponsor was responsible that the immigrant would not require public benefits.
They still do. I signed one for my nanny last year.

I haven't posted here in well over a year. But as a lifelong Republican (until Trump was elected) your comment above is so far off base it's beyond laughable. I've spent 16 years volunteering in school helping kids with math. Hardest working kids overall? Hispanics! And you say they have no reason to come here other than handouts. Maybe a better life than where they were. And the fact most I see are busting their asses day in and day out. I know plenty of kids with BOTH parents working and sometimes one of the parents has multiple jobs.
1. Aren't there waaayyyy more who head for the welfare office as soon as they cross the border... legally or otherwise?
No
2. Are we American taxpayers "supposed" to support illegals, just because they "got here"?
Read above
Illegal is "illegal". Round 'em up and ship 'em back. Fuck you and your high horse!
Years ago you needed a sponsor. That sponsor signed off that the immigrant was their responsibility for a period of 3 years. No immigrant benefits during that time.
Why did we change from that?

The plural of anecdote is not data. And no one disputes they come here for a better life. The question Trump was asking is what are we getting out of it? The answer is vastly increased welfare and education expenses, crime and a disturbing change in the country's culture. I realize a lot of liberals think turning the US into mexico is a good thing. Plenty of us do not.

Unfettered immigration is an existential threat to the survival of America!

No, not way more who head to welfare office. Rather the opposite; working multiple jobs.
Next, we support those who are here legally who REFUSE to work. Deal with that you moron.
Wake the fuck up ... who does all the jobs that legals are too lazy to do?
You are a complete dumb fuck.
And whose fault is that? That's the result of americans voting and keep voting for idiots that expand the welfare state. Blame the welfare scheme, not the immigrants...If they didn't think they could get "social support money" at the expense of American taxpayers, they'd have no reason at all to come here.
We Americans can't/don't take adequate care of our own less fortunate... let alone have the money to support criminal, savage invaders.
