They would have no choice if we registered every gun. The biggest hole in your argument is guns start out as legal until they’re sold then there is no tracking them. After that guns can wind up in anyone’s hands.
Also there is no major gun problems in countries with sensible gun laws, legally purchased or otherwise.
As per the Tenth Amendment, The Federal Government does not control local (state, cities) law enforcement and cannot compel local law enforcement to act as immigration agents. We have immigration enforcement agents (ICE agents) to handle this.
A sanctuary city or state is a city or state where the local police do not enforce federal immigration laws against illegal immigrants. these cities or states are not seeking to prevent the enforcement of immigration law by federal authorities. rather, it means that these cities or states have instructed local police and other officials not to assist in the enforcement of those laws. (as per their constitutional rights) more importantly, a city or state doesn’t need to declare itself to be a sanctuary, because it is not required for them to enforce the immigration laws. Immigration enforcement is Federal governments' responsibility.
Bottom line is: Sanctuary city or state is really a made up term and has no legal definition. Rightwing douchebags and extremists are using the term out of its context to push their rhetoric. Not using the local law enforcement helps to have a safer and more just communities. (common sense Public Policy) The federal government should deal with immigration and If the feds want the state to get involved then, we should completely overhaul our immigration laws.
California gets a bad rep but there many other cities which have chosen this policy:
