Maybe there's the possibility the prosecutors, since this is San Francisco, overcharged on purpose. Who knows when you're dealing with these people.

No overcharging in this case occurred. The prosecution simply failed to dumb it down enough for an illegal in san Francisco. If you are a white guy wearing a MAGA hat and you did this, you would be looking at life in the slammer.

The prosecutor followed the law and his duty to bring appropriate charges, including alternative charges where the jury could find guilty for lesser crimes. At a certain point he just could not take the San Francisco out of the case. I don't know how prosecutors get in office there- whether appointed or elected- but if you are a prosecutor in a state where you are elected and you did not protect the people by bringing murder charges then you are not going to be re-elected- not because it is politics but because you are not performing your oath of office.

It looks like jury nullification to me. The criminal could get out based on time served for the weapons conviction.

It is the daca kids that will get hurt by this type of case. The lefty's think they do not have to give anything on border security to get a daca deal but they are holding no cards whatsoever and things like the steinle case will just put legislators under more and more pressure from their constituents to do something about illegals. So the tards can have their little fun today talking about how whites deserve to be shot to compensate for past injustices against minorities but they better start figuring out how to get trump in a better mood before daca expires in march.

A complete travesty of justice, but it is San Francisco, so finding a jury willing to convict an illegal was always going to be problematic. Hand slap for murder. Message is clear. Murder is a misdemeanor in San Francisco if you're an illegal.

Sadly, you are correct. Another case of a prosecutor letting politics determine the charge they bring. Had they at least given the jury the option to consider a lesser charge, the verdict would have been more appropriate. The jury did have the option to convict for man slaughter but the prosecution did not present a case for criminal neglect. Remember they are only supposed to take the facts as presented in court. The prosecution did not present a scenario for man slaughter.

This verdict lies at the feet of the prosecution. Other people are blaming San Francisco liberals etc but if the prosecution doesn’t leave room for criminal neglect or present evidence for it, how can the jury reasonably come to that decision?

This case should have never been an election issue. Most people never bothered to learn the facts of the case and assumed Lopez was some sort of homocidal maniac. That pressured the prosecution to overreach.
