Quote from the1:
There is medically documented evidence that addiction to food is a disease of the brain the same way addiction to any other substance is. CAT scans and MRI's have proven that people with eating disorders have abnormal brain activity when they are subjected to things like sugars.

Are you kidding me? Since when is "spaghetti bolognese and mince and potatoes" healthy food? All of these items are extremely poor food choices that contain extremely high levels of starch and/or saturated fats, that get converted into sugars in the human body. These social workers need to take a proper class on nutrition or biochemistry before they are ever allowed to evaluate another case like this. This is an abolutely sinful case of of abuse on the part of the state. The state set this family up for failure by subjecting them to foods that would guarantee they would be more likely to GAIN weight rather than lose weight and as a result they are going to have their children taken away forever. I don't think I've ever heard of a more disgraceful story in my life. [/B]
Quote from joneog:
Don't really feal like getting into a long debate about addiction since it usually goes around in circles, but...
I'm a smoker, when I light up a cigarette I'm sure I get abnormal brain activity (more than usual) similar to other "addicts," but I take month long breaks from smoking all time time; to give my body a break, to prove that free-will still exists etc. (I'm not saying I quit "for good" and then start smoking again, I quit with the assumption I'll start again in the future)
I guess that's not normal for the typical smoker but addicts of everything - from heroine to ice cream - quit all the time. An illness is something you can not rid yourself by force of will alone; cancer is an illness, shoving a lot of food down your throat is not. If we head down the road of declaring everything a "mental illness" we eventually get to a place of scientific and social determinism.
Oh, you're 500 lbs, than the airline should be forced to give you 2 seats for the price of 1 - since its not your fault.
Oh, you have an addiction to stealing stuff, how can we arrest your for larceny - since its not your fault.
etc. etc. etc.
