I think the OP's main point is valid. Most newbies don't know when to stop; when they are beat.

Some will recognize this and seek more education. A subset of those will develop the self-awareness to be aware of and compensate for their psychological limitations, i.e. reprogramming the mind. A subset of those will then go on to make it big. Maybe 1-2% of those who start.
