Times are tough but this is NOT the "greatest economic downturn and the worst decade for jobs ever" and the system's NOT "broken."

Wrong, on both counts. In the entire history of the USA there has not been a decade with no job growth but significant population growth, until 2000-2009. And when an entire decade of college graduates, including the bright young lady who was the subject of the original post, can't find a job after applying at 1200 places -- what conclusion is there left to draw other than 'the system is broken'?

Your attitude sucks and is holding you back more than anything else. Either you can adapt and prosper or continue blaming everything external to you and fail. Your choice.

I'm down in Mountain View a lot. The University is in Canada, but in the 90s, has had many of its grads employed in the Silicon Valley. Don't exactly see very many young people there, and maybe your firm hired some youngsters, but ended up firing some older people.

And I most certainly am not an 'argumentative pain in the ass'. Nor are my friends/classmates. We just want jobs, and don't even get the time of day from firms out there, because they're just not hiring.

If every college grad tried to find a job right now, salaries of college grads would revert to zero, as supply > demand. With zero salaries, the capital base through which college grads can start new businesses would also deplete to zero, thus, the economy would continue down its path of crashing.

More college grads collecting welfare, instead of going to minimal-paid jobs where they just suppress salaries, is one of the only ways that the market will regain stability. Hopefully, coupled with massive defaults on student loans, which hopefully would force student loan makers to cut back on supply.

They would just use the H1B clause, and import indians working for a fraction of the price. You forgot globalization when doing the math. Have you noticed all those indians working those IT jobs? They are filled with em, especially in companies like Microsoft etc..

Hence, why the economy is collapsing. The use of cheap offshore labour has driven down salaries for American tech workers, which means, they don't have any cash left over for savings. And the savings that have been created by their labour, has been mal-appropriated to the financial industry, where it was mal-invested in things such as CRE, MBS, etc.

The lack of savings and job/financial security means that these workers can't start start-ups or create new firms. Job creation comes to a stand-still, and, as we're seeing now, eventually collapses.

How do people think those $500 PC's arrive on their desks -- when PC's cost $2000 just a decade ago? By outsourcing/offshoring everything possible, and not hiring/training new grads in the tech industry.

Its incredible that there are actually people who would come to this forum, and claim that zero job growth (but 10% population growth) in the past decade is anything but a disaster, and likewise, its equally incredible that someone would claim that someone who applies to thousands of jobs in such an environment and isn't successful has an 'attitude' problem. People, its a simple numbers game -- when tech employment has fallen, and 30-40% of the tech workforce has been replaced by foreigners in the past decade -- its pretty simple to conclude that the probability of a domestic new grad getting hired in the tech industry is small.

You're an idiot and professional victim. In the Great Depression people were thin, starving and waited in block long lines for soup. Today they get 2 years of unemployment benefits (so far), weigh 350 pounds, and drive around Walmart on electric scooters buying food with gov't checks to stuff their fat faces with while they watch TV all day.

I've been with this NY software company for some time, and 2 years ago we were trying to hire programmers for some entry level positions. We could not find any. Apparently all of them just wanted to work on Wall Street for a "guaranteed" bonus that my company was not offering. All the candidates we interviewed were phonies that did not have basic knowledge of what we were asking (and it was just C++ and Microsoft MFC, mind you). Now those positions are gone, and I guess, a lot of "guaranteed" bonus takers are looking for jobs too.
