did I not just read in the last few years that scientists have determined men and monkeys are not in the same line but they share a common ancestor? Therefore that chart is not up with current thought?

I just read your post.... I see it sort of explains the chart in light of new thought.

But that chart or diagram has been around for decades and when I saw it at the natural history musuem in New York as a 10 year old... we were told man was a direct descendant.

It's not new thought. It goes back to Darwin. These days things are better explained, that's all.

there are not "better explained" it is different to say man and monkeys had a common ancestor than to say man descended from monkeys.

Do pancakes descend from waffles or do the both come from flour?

Of course the common ancestor looked a lot like a monkey. ; )

Sure it's different and not precise but to all intents and purposes paints the right general picture. You share the same ancestor as apes.

Not sure whether that first image is actually of an ape in the modern sense. Could be an "ape-looking", ancestral hominid.

watching a science program yesterday....

if the world is pretty much made up of all the elements and everything here is made up from these then does that mean we also really are a little bit of a rock, dinosaur and other dead people as well!
Not really evolution but still --- what a way of recycling.
