Quote from brocklanders:
Can a survivalist on here that is really preparing for this scenario tell me why buying precious metals is so important for the economic collapse of this kind? I would just buy guns and ammo and basic necessities instead. That would be the only currency worth having after such a collapse. What good is buying metals without a small army to protect and transport it? Yeah, gold is a store of value but only if you can hang on to it long enough to use it to buy stuff after the the s$!# meets the fan. It would be more of a liability by making you a target with a "stockpile" of gold and silver than anything else. Personally, I am doing nothing because nothing this drastic is probably what is going to happen, at least in our lifetime anyway.
You are quite right in several respects. However no one knows what level of collapse, correction, depression or deep recession we might be facing without it being a speculative guess. No knows the level of rage, violence nor criminal intent or marshal law or oppression that might accompany any of these scenarios.
So ... having a positive outlook, investing and trading well regardless of the circumstance ... would require a spectrum of capital preservation that meets some or all of differing scenarios and their priority.
Having Gold and Silver and the inability to protect it would be unwise. Having Gold and no food in a collapsed economy where Gold is useless would be unwise. Having a lot of food and no ability to protect it in a violent and collapsed economy would be unwise.
Having a moderated view of supplies and trading and investing for the future is smart. I have many things that retain value but currently I want to keep for security reasons until the times prove they are not necessary.
Preparation is not over reaction nor fanatical unless proof of the times warrants it useless. Usually however that is not determined before hand.
Hence the well prepared write the history taught to our children.
Precious metals could have value in semi-traumatic times where market trading and sustenance and agri-economies are functioning. However when their is widespread famine those commodities lose value to the common peoples. The wealthy and well fed will still accumulate them on the cheap however.
Community can and will form out of fears, faith, safety, necessity or control as has always been recorded amongst the survivors of mankind's trials or deluges. It usually is a saving necessity and rediscovery of the masses versus a selfless cooperative of individual ideology. More of a "huddling together for warmth" than anything noble.
