WTF would one do with a stockpile of precious metals in a situation where water, food and shelter are all that matters?

If you have a place with fresh water ( river) and a stock pile of neccesities which you've hoarded and planned for years before this happens and you can somehow get to this place in one piece then and only then may you have a remote chance... ;o) ..in the meantime..."Vive la vida loca" as ricky martin would say

You buy food from the people that have excess food. A family with a 160 acre farm is not going to be able to eat all that food by themselves and they will want something that isnt going to spoil over time...thats why silver and gold.

Nope, thugs generally are not that smart. They think food only comes from the supermarket so they would keep running around from supermarket to supermarket. If they couldnt find anything,they would just start breaking into people homes to check their refrigerators.

And anyway, the thugs would have to catch the farmer right when the harvest occurs. Theres going to be like at least 3 or 6 months when the food isnt even ready to eat...the thugs will have to skip that guys farm land. If it was close to harvest, the thugs will have to start harvesting the food while the farmer sleeps. They will quickly realize that harvesting is a hard job and takes alot of time without machinery and tools. You underestimate the thugs... I was thinking, where could this happen and be a role model of what could happen. Then it hit me Haiti...
