Very possible. There's even a name for this - it's called the Bradley Effect. When Tom Bradley ran for governor of CA against Deukmajian, Bradley had a double digit lead in the polls. when the votes were actually counted, Deukmajian won.
McCain's campaign is being horribly run, nearly as bad as Bob Dole's campaign against Clinton. McCain is making very difficult for himself to win.
