If I exercise an option, how long would it take for me to receive/sell shares of the stock?

For example, if I am short a stock but own calls for it, how long would it take for me to receive the shares from the call options? It may be a dumb question, but I have never exercised an option before and have ideas that would involve me doing so. I would assume it is by the end of the day but I just want to make sure

if you exercise after the close today probably saturday morning they will post. I've never exercised early so don't know how that works. Your account will look all weird until things offset so don't freak out if it shows you down big.

Call your broker and find out in case you need to exercise early at some point. Better to know so you are prepared.
