Hopefully you will get clarification from @garachen, but for myself, I should be able to explain where the edge comes from. Example (hypothetical):
Robinhood traders can only start trading at 9am pre-market, but I ca trade from 4am using my broker. If I get positive news on stock which is popular with RH traders, I can start accumulating prior to 9am. I should see immediate pop at 9. If I make money on this trade, I know exactly why.

Good example.

To be clear - what I attempt to do and how is well known to me. I'd say my 'edge' is detailed market knowledge following years of specialization and research and custom tools to aid that process. This is what I've done to deserve to get paid. Add to that - I don't see how I could simply move to another market and get paid there as I have no detailed knowledge or experience of how it moves. I wouldn't know. For example, I 'dabbled' a bit in CL a few years back and it moves (moved) very differently from ES. For day trading, I believe in specialization, unless you attempt to exploit a specific set-up which occurs with a lower frequency across multiple markets.

I don't see myself adding value to the market. I simply attempt to exploit daily price movement and I can do this both by taking and giving liquidity.
 
I’ll tell you the general idea of a trick I read about a long time ago and use currently.

(Using round numbers). For charitable giving say I buy $1m total of 20 different sticks. Pretend half go up 500k-> 750k. Half go down 500k -> 250k so I make 0. At year + 1 day you donate (not sell) the winners. At year - day you sell the losers and collect short term capital loss. So with $0 earned you’ve created 250k in valuable short term losses and a tax deduction of 750k.

can you elaborate on the whole 'ES is not a solo thing, it's a team effort'?

are you trying to say that the ES market has become too efficient and alpha has eroded? b/c that has absolutely not been the case in the past 3 years of wild fluctuations we saw with the ES market.

perhaps you're referring more to the 2010-2017 period?

the ES and esp the NQ during the past 3 years were a gift from heaven in terms of price inefficiencies. i'd almost agree with you if were talking strictly daytrading the ES but there was plenty of alpha to be generated with swinging the ES from 2018-2021.
