IB TWS & Firewalls

Does the login in box start saying attempt #3, attempt #4 etc? If so then you are not going through socks cap.


Try this, socksify internet explorer, and run it through socks cap. If you can surf the web through sockscap->http-tunnel, then something is wrong with TWS. You will know that IE is going through http-tunnel because it will be dog slow.
 
No, it no longer says attempt 3, 4, 5, 6, etc. It just goes out to lunch.

Anyway, good suggestion about trying to run the web browser through sockscap. I was unable to get that to work either so there is something still to be configured for sockscap and/or http-tunnel. All of the tests still pass on http-tunnel so I guess I'll just keep playing with settings. I'm beginning to think this isn't going to work in my environment though.

It might not work through your firewall. Check with the http-tunnel faq site. I believe that firewalls can be setup to block non http traffic on port 80... that would explain why it doesn't work for you.
 
They can indeed, however, I am using a chat program that is not http but supports an http proxy and that works just fine. I'm sure there's some little nuance in my firewall that http-tunnel doesn't account for. It wouldn't be the first time, there are many programs that don't work even though they claim to support proxy servers.

For the benefit of others, I thought I would post what I did to FINALLY get TWS working through a firewall that has no ports opened and an authenticated http proxy server.

http-tunnel never worked for me. I did however find a reference to a product called Loophole. I set up my loophole server on my home machine and installed the client this morning on my work box. I ran the TWS stand alone program through SocksCap and everything worked like a charm.

The way I do this is a ssh connection (my company does allow outbound ssh), with port-forwarding enabled.

I then point tws (via the config file) to 127.0.0.1:4000, and it works fabulously.

If anyone has a unix shell account on a fast host, this is the way to go. And its free! (presuming you have the unix account).
