IB TWS connection problems at work. Desperate...

Hey guys,

I hope someone will be able to help me. For over a year I am trying to figure out how to use IB TWS software at work, but nothing works.. It just goes in a loop with trying to connect error. I am using Windows 7 and I am not admin at my work laptop. So ok I figured out that our company is blocking certain traffic etc. What just came to mind last week was, I could just connect through my mobile phone and bypass company internet entirely. This for sure should work. Well, it does not. It did work for ThinkorSwim software, but I only use it for some analysis. I trade at IB and I would much rather use TWS. I was really surprised at why connecting company laptop to my mobile phone internet (private phone) does not solve the problem.. Could it be that they are blocking things at network card level? Is it windows firewall? But in this case if connection is through cell phone, firewall should be bypassed right?

Can anyone thing of a solution? Other than remote desktop, which would mean I have to have home computer on all the time. VPN would probably also not work, because you need admin privileges for installing software. Besides this costs..

I tryed to ping the servers from company internet and all packets got dropped, then I tried when I connected through sell phone and it worked. But still, I cannot connect.

thanks for any help guys
Are you making any money so you want to make more?

ha !! This reminded me of myself trading during office hour decades ago.

I had to sneak in a small little laptop and HSPA modem, used my own sim card and internet,
then trade.

Not the right thing to do actually.
So I compensate the company by working extra hours

I don't like the IB stability / complexity.
perhaps you should compare with other trading platform.

Sound too risky to me this trading from work. It will give you a guilty complex.
Your work collegues will detect this shit and before you know it you'll be on the street.
Suggest trade longer term stuff, place trades before or after work.
Use a tablet even and trade during lunch break or in the carpark when you arrive at work or going home.

I was sneaking in some trades at this place I worked. My co-workers started peeking over my shoulder - a year later the office looked like a full-on prop shop. The shop of 5 was trading like crazy, we would rotate one person to answer phones for an hour. I quit a few months later- declaring my paycheck was no longer worth the hassle of commuting and wanted to cash out of my company stock - I was sure the bubble would burst soon - and it did. It was a good job at a fortune 500 company - the arrogance of it all.

LOL

OP, maybe you have a dream job except for the internet connection. If it's not a dream job then start looking for another one.
Part of my reason for leaving my last job was just this issue. (Not being able to run IB TWS at work). The other reason was I had become underpaid over time.
New job was a 12% pay increase, free health care, and wide open internet.

Looking for a new job doesn't cost anything.
