ib newbie help order execution

longtime trader just left firm to trade own account thru ib. been reading about booktrader, brackettrader, buttontrader, need some guidance of how best to utilize ib.

i trade active stocks and electronic futures , short term trading (15 minutes to 5 days), not scalping, but certainly active. my only experience with ib is using the standard tws page, clicking on offering, etc...

what's a smart way to trade thru ib? any and all comments welcome! thanks in advance.
 
this is what I would do first:

1. go down load the brackettrader. (it is free to try).

2. open an IB papertrading account (not the demo) and give all the buttons a good work out during market hours.
