IB Initial Margin on ES is 22,000

It's better than AMPGlobal though:

"Due extreme volatility - During tonight's Night Session, We have currently set the Exchange-Traded Futures to liquidation only. We will not be accepting any new orders during the US Overnight Session."
 
$22k for 1 es is down 420 es to lose it all.Overnight you can only fall 5%. I can see $12-$14k per es overnight margin . Your talking about 18% or so to wipe $22k out. But $22k intraday is insane.Personally none of this affects me as i have a big 6 fig account i trade with
 
When I see people bitch about margins during times like these, I am assured that my low opinion of many traders is justified.

Dude , the size of your account is of no import. A broker has zero interest in taking on any of your trading risk , short or long.

If something happened to wipe your equity out, +200k , would you be writing a check the next day?
 
I Know my account size has no relevance . This am spy down around 9% . To blow out $22k per es it’s have to be down 18%. We’d get a trading halt at 13% first . But yes were in historical times and anything can happen. I have well well well over $200k in account as I also trade stocks at times . I’m 95% cash so all what were talking about irrelevant. I’m sure some brokers go under today and this week but I assure you IB a monster in this business .
 
Brokers had ample time to liquidate positions from 17:00 to 17:15, and again from 8:45 onwards. Today the entire gap risk (and therefore liquidation risk) was less than 150 points = $7500. Any broker observing the CME minimums and with auto-liquidation did just fine, just like they would have done throughout the entire crisis of 2008.

Strange times indeed. What if the US and the rest of the global powers decide to shut everything down. What is a major bank or banks fail. Is it possible for limit down day 1, maybe day 2, maybe day 3? What if exchanges shut down? When they reopen you think it will be an orderly limit down but plenty of time to liquidate on a bounce?
